Here's a little bit about the story of Kanani Akina, the Doll of the Month for June 2022!
Kanani's story starts in Kauai, Hawaii, in 2011. She is excited to have a good summer helping out at her family's shave ice shop and going paddleboarding with her friends, but her cousin Rachel arrives from New York. Rachel isn't that comfortable with Hawaii and prefers the city life, but Kanani wants to help her adjust and feel welcome, so she helps her. Meanwhile, Kanani discovers monk seals, an endangered species of seal, and starts fundraising for seal conservation efforts at her family's shave ice stand while dealing with friendship troubles.
I read Kanani's book a while ago, but I remember thinking the cousin was kind of a downer and the story would have been better without her. I mean, who wouldn't love visiting Hawaii??? Ok, she might have been going through some difficult stuff, but still!
Kanani is definitely one of the most adorable dolls AG has ever made! 😍
