Reports are coming in that during last night's episode of the HBO series The Last of Us, there was a scene with an abandoned American Girl store and various American Girl dolls, including Kira and Makena. The Last of Us is based on a video game set in a post apocalyptic world, and apparently the video game had the American Girl store scene as well, so it's interesting that they kept the AG reference for the TV adaptation. However, the apocalypse happened in 2003, and Kira and Makena were not available then...
A bonus American Girl connection: the episode starred Storm Reid, who played Aki, Lea's Native Brazilian friend, in Lea to the Rescue!
Wouldn't the whole thing be inaccurate as there was only one American Girl Place store in 2003 in Chicago and it was not even in a mall.
Coming from a fan of The Last of Us, the outbreak happened in 2003 but the story is set in 2023. So the dolls are accurate for the time.
Am I the only one who finds this scary and funny at the same time? The picture is unsettling and looks like something out of a horror movie. Is The Last of Us a horror movie or show? I think the AG dolls are in the wrong spots because they have minds of their own and came to life because of the apocalypse and being abandoned like that. Perhaps they are evil and the store is cursed? Possibly because they are angry of being abandoned and never being bought like that?
I also noticed Kira in the Rebecca slot and Josefina in the Julie slot lol! My theory is that during the chaos of apocalypse survivor, raiders etc. may have knocked over the displays. Because they don’t know much about the dolls, survivors would place them in the wrong slot or shelf if they even bothered to put them back.
kira as rebecca and josefina as julie? the apocalypse is wild! :o
