Joss’s hearing loss in the books has me a bit confuse. For background, I am completely and profoundly deaf in my right ear and my only two options are cross hearing aids (hearing aids worn in both ears, ‘bad‘ ear sends signals to ‘good’ ear & brain processes it as being heard from the ‘bad’ ear) and a cochlear implant (surgically implanted hearing aid, sends sound signals directly to the brain instead of going through the ear). In Joss’s story, she is completely and profoundly deaf in her left ear with partial hearing in her right ear yet only wears a traditional hearing aid…. leaving her still without hearing in her left ear. Traditional hearing aids only make sounds louder, and have been phased out for profound hearing loss in one ear since the introduction of cross hearing aids & cochlear implants. Joss would not be a candidate for a traditional hearing aid. I just feel like this could only be caused by massive research oversight on american girl’s behalf.
