I breathed in. I breathed out. This is what I had been practicing for. I would win. Ugh, here comes that competitiveness again. Meditate. Stress-free me.
I walked into the classroom to see Blaire scribbling on a piece of paper. ”Hi” I said to her.
”What? Yeah hi” Blaire focused on her drawing.
“Are you excited for gymnastics tryouts again?” I asked Blaire. We did gymnastics together every year.
”Actually, I thought I’d try volleyball this year.”
What? Blaire wasn’t gonna do gymnastics with me? I really deeply needed her too. She doesn’t get mad over nuttin. She’s like my conscience with human hands. That really helps. One time I was so mad, I about pushed a girl over. Blaire stopped me though. That’s just what she does.
”wait, what? What am I gonna do without you? I’m gonna break all the wooden benches if you aren’t there.”
”Seriosly, noone should have taught you karate” Blaire muttered under her breath.
”Class take your seats!” The teacher told everyone to settle down and started the lesson.
But all I could think about was how meditating wasn’t working for me, and that Blaire not being there meant that I could potentially get kicked off the gymnastics team. And gymnastics meant the absolute world to me.
what do you guys think?
This excerpt beautifully captures the struggle between personal growth and the fear of losing a crucial support system. The tension between pursuing individual interests and relying on friendship for stability adds depth to the protagonists character.
