part one
a strange place

Tuning out the rest of the world, Cassia Tailor dragged her suitcase into the dorm room, along with two duffels and a backpack. She pulled her phone out of her pink, iridescent purse and called the help desk. No service. “Huh,” she thought aloud. “Maybe I’m not on the correct Wi-Fi...”
“AAH!”
Cassia turned around. A girl with light brown hair and a yellow-and-pink baseball tee was barely visible in the large papasan chair. “Oh, sorry, um, what’s your name?” “Elle. Elle Jennings. Weeeellll, Elle Medina, because I’m a foster kid, and for no reason at all, go by my foster parent’s last name.“
A strand of dark hair fell over Cassia’s eye as she bent over to reach a white AirPod. “You-you dropped your AirPod thingy,“ she said. “Oh, thanks.” Elle said, abandoning the fostering topic. She took the wireless earbud and jammed it into her ear. Suddenly, Cassia could hear the faintest bass beat alongside some flute through them. She walked over to the white scroll bed, which Had an identical one next to it. Cassia replaced the black blanket with a white one, that had black polka dots. The black solid one, she decided, could lie folded in a drawer. The black pillows looked fine. She saw that the school-issued blanket on Elle’s bed had been replaced with a sunset ombré. Elle’s side of the room was full of posters and memories and photographs. She had even painted a butterfly on the wall! Suddenly, a door opened. A girl with bouncy blonde curls plopped onto a stool. “Yo, Medina,” she called. Elle took her earbuds out. “‘Sup, Thompson.” She replied. “Where’s Carter?” “LACY!”
A much taller girl with slightly darker brown hair than Elle stepped in. “What?“ she groaned. “I’m like, supposed to be in the gym in like, 15 minutes, so, like, make this quick.” Likely Lacy, as Cassia internally called her, sat on the floor willingly, even when Elle offered her the papasan. “Oh, dang! I’m so dumb!” Elle giggled. “That,” she pointed to Cassia, “is Cassia, my new roomie.” “Oh. My. Gosh, Cassia! We have, like, SO much to tell you, starting with the fact that we like, sneak into each other’s like, dorms at night. I mean, it’s like, Sierra’s fault that our dorms are like, connected.” Lacy’s rambling, which Cassia tuned out of halfway through, contained many of the usual “Likes”. “How old are you, Cassia?” “16...”
“I’m almost 16. R-N, [the other girl was speaking in texting talk now] I’m only 15.” “Oh my volleyball court, speaking of fifteen, I gotta go!” Lacy screamed, bursting out of the room. “Something seems a little, you know, off, about Lacy, right, Everly?” Elle asked Blondie. “I know.“
“So off.” That night, Cassia couldn’t sleep. She crept out of bed, threw on a vest, and started for the courtyard. When She Arrived, someone with a suave, deep voice said;
“You shouldn’t be here.” Cassia almost screamed, but was able to resist. “Who’s there?” She asked. “Just me. I was joking. Th’name’s Aiden. Aiden Wood.” “Oh. Sorry! I’m Cassia Tailor.” He looked at her like they had something the rest of the world didn’t. But when Joslyn appeared, she looked at Cassia like she was in her place. Cassia didn’t know how she knew her name. She was SURE she’d seen her somewhere before...
“Cassia...Tailor?“ Joslyn stuttered. “Yes, why?” Cassia moaned, ready to get back to her dorm. “Th-th-the p-p-prophecy!!” Joslyn stuttered again. “Joslyn, call the other Shadows. We have work to do.” Aiden commanded. Suddenly, Cassia was surrounded by 5 people, all with dark looks on their faces. “Get the heiress, now.” “HEIRESS?” she screamed. “WHAT HEIRESS?” Cassia decided it must’ve been her, for she was soon in a tight grip. Someone was trying to pry something from her...but what? Suddenly, she was grabbed by someone else. These arms felt kind and valiant, and a boy’s voice shouted;
“If you so much as TRY to hurt her again, you‘ll pay.”
You like? part two tomorrow!
