Historical Characters and Best Friends
Daring and strong Kaya is the only Native American doll ever released by American Girl. She loves her horse Steps High, and always takes time to respect the Earth. She has black hair, pinwheel brown eyes and dark skin. She has her own face mold, the Kaya mold, that was only hers until Logan Everett in 2017. A major difference in her mold is that her mouth is closed. Kaya released in 2002 and is still available today. She is from 1764.
Brave, adventurous and independent Felicity was the fourth doll released from American Girl. She loves adventures in the outdoors and isn't much of a fan of sitting-down things. She has auburn hair, green eyes, the Classic mold and light skin. Felicity was released in 1991, changed meet outfits in 2005, retired in 2011, rereleased in 2017 with darker eyes and feathered eyebrows and reretired in 2019. She is from 1774.
Quiet and funny Elizabeth was the second Best Friend doll. She is a new girl from England who meets Felicity at lessons with Miss Manderly and becomes best friends with her. She has long blond hair, blue eyes, the Josefina mold and light skin. She is from 1774. In Felicity's books, she was originally a brunette, but when the doll came out, she was changed to a blond to distinguish her from Felicity. She was released in 2005 and retired in 2011.
Sweet, brave and heroic Caroline Abbott was the 13th Historical Character. She loves to sail and dreams of being the captain of her own ship. She has blond hair, seafoam green eyes that are exclusive to her, the Classic mold and light skin. She is from 1812 and released in 2012, the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, and retired in 2014. She is the first and currently the only doll to retire under the BeForever brand.
Gentle, caring and hopeful Josefina was the first Latina doll released by American Girl. She dreams of becoming a healer when she grows up. She has black hair, brown eyes, olive skin and her own mold that was first reused in 2004. She is from 1824 and released in 1997. She got a updated meet outfit in 2014 and is still available today. She has permanent gold hoop earrings in her ears.
Confident, courteous and bold Cecile was one of the only dolls released as a pair with her friend Marie-Grace. She wants to be a actress when she grows up, and has a talent for storytelling. She has dark brown hair, hazel eyes, dark skin and the Sonali mold. She was released in 2011 and retired in 2014. Her retirement caused a lot of controversy along with Ivy Ling's at the same time, because when she was going to be retired, there'd be only one African-American character doll left.
Shy, caring and adventurous Marie-Grace was one of the only dolls to be released as a pair along with her friend Cecile. She likes to sing and enjoys parades, and loves her dog. She has brown hair, light blue eyes that are exclusive to her, and light skin. She has a face mold that was only used for her. She is from 1853 and was released in 2011 and retired in 2014. Marie-Grace's codename was "Sarah", while Cecile's was "Denise".
Brave, hardworking and steadfast Kirsten was one of the first American Girl dolls ever released. She is eager to try new things, and is skilled at sewing and money-making. Kirsten has blond hair, blue eyes, the Classic mold and light skin. Her name was originally going to be Jill. She is from 1854, and was released in 1986 and retired in 2010. Her hairstyle with bangs isn't historically accurate, but it is perceived that she has bangs so that they wouldn't have to drastically change the wig.
Courageous, strong and resilient Addy was the first ever non-white doll released by American Girl. Addy is very smart and loves school, and she wants to be a teacher when she grows up. She has black hair, brown eyes and dark skin. She has a face mold that was created for her and first reused in 1995. She has permanent golden hoop earrings in her ears. She is from 1864. She released in 1993 and got "cubed"- a term for only being available online and in the flagship stores- in 2017.
Compassionate, bright and kind Samantha was one of the first three American Girl dolls released. She likes the outdoors, reading and painting. She has brown hair, brown eyes and light skin. She has the Classic mold. From 1986 to 2004, she was the face of American Girl- her silhouette was in the Pleasant Company logo!
Practical and hardworking Nellie was the first explicitly white doll to use the Josefina face mold. From a young age, she has been a maid, servant and factory worker to help her family out. Nellie has honey blond hair, blue eyes, freckles, light skin and the Josefina mold. Nellie was born in Ireland and got an Irish dancing outfit. Nellie is from 1906. She released in 2004 and sold out on December 4, 2008 before officially retiring in 2009.
Confident, inspiring and charismatic Rebecca was the first Jewish Historical Character made. She dreams of being a actress, but her parents want her to be a teacher. Rebecca has brown hair, hazel eyes, light skin and the Josefina mold. Creative and curious Claudie Wells debuted with a new face mold and was the first doll to have her book author younger than the American Girl brand. She is inspired by all of the artists she sees, but she feels like there's nothing special about her and sets out to develop her own special talent. Claudie has black hair, brown eyes, dark skin and the Claudie face mold. Claudie is from 1922 and was released in 2022.
Clever, creative and inquisitive Kit was the first American Girl doll with freckles. Kit dreams of being a reporter and writes her own stories to distract her from the real stories of the Depression, but those stories become her own as Dad’s car dealership is forced to close down. Kit has blond hair, blue eyes, light skin, freckles and the Classic face mold. Kit is from 1932. She was released in 2000 and got updated with a new outfit in 2014. She was cubed in 2019.
Loyal, courageous and compassionate Ruthie was the last Best Friends doll released. Ruthie likes princesses and flouncy things, but she discovers her brave side when she helps her best friend Kit not get evicted. Ruthie has black hair, gray eyes, light skin and the Classic face mold. In Kit’s books, Ruthie has brown eyes, but her eyes were changed to gray when the doll came out. Ruthie released in 2008 and retired in 2014. She is from 1932.
Kind, helpful and spirited Nanea was the first Hawaiian BeForever doll released. Nanea likes to hula dance, hanging out with her friends and school, but her world changes when Pearl Harbor is attacked and World War 2 breaks out. Nanea has brown hair, hazel eyes, medium skin and her own face mold. She is from 1941. American Girl started planning Nanea in 2011, probably due to the success of Hawaiian Girl of the Year 2011 Kanani. Nanea released in 2017 and is still available.
Lovable, feisty and patriotic Molly was one of the first American Girl dolls released, and the only one who wears glasses. Molly likes to tap dance, but things change when her dad is sent to World War 2. Molly has brown hair, gray eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Molly had a movie that was released in 2006- where ironically she was played by the British Maya Ritter! Molly is from 1944. Molly released in 1986 and retired in 2013, and had a brief comeback in 2018.
Sweet, shy and brave Emily only appeared in Happy Birthday, Molly, but she got ascended to the Best Friend doll after American Girl didn’t want to make both of Molly’s best friends, Linda and Susan. Emily’s house got bombed in World War 2, and she moves to America and has to stay with Molly. Emily has red hair, blue eyes, light skin and the Classic face mold. In Molly’s movie, Emily is played by Tory Green, who is Australian! Emily is from 1945. Emily released in 2006 and retired in 2013.
Energetic, optimistic and inventive Maryellen was the first American Girl character to be exclusive to BeForever. Maryellen likes watching TV, playing outside and drawing, and she realizes that being different is OK throughout her books. Maryellen has strawberry blonde hair, hazel eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Maryellen is from 1954. Early prototypes of Maryellen showed her with a pink striped dress, but in the end they went with blue. Maryellen released in 2015 and is still available.
Optimistic, courageous and bold Melody was the third African-American character to be released. Melody likes to sing and garden, and works hard to make her community be fair and equal. Melody has black hair, brown eyes, dark skin and the Sonali mold. Melody is from 1963. Melody’s Amazon special, Love Has to Win, had Melody wearing glasses- probably because the actress, Marsai Martin, wore them. Melody released in 2016 and is still available.
Sunny, fun-loving and optimistic Julie is the BeForever doll that is from the latest time period. Julie loves basketball, but her new school won't let her play basketball on the boy's team. Julie has long blond hair, brown eyes, light skin and the Josefina mold. Julie is from 1975. Julie is the only American Girl doll who has her parent's divorced. Julie came out in 2007 and got a new meet outfit in 2014.
Talented and lucky Ivy was the first and only Asian-American Historical Character. Ivy is a gymnast who has to choose between her big gymnastics meet or her family's Chinese New Year party. Ivy has light skin, black hair, brown eyes and the Jess mold. Ivy is the Best Friend doll of Julie Albright. Ivy is from 1975. Ivy was released in 2007 and retired in 2014.
Aspirational, individualistic and imaginative Courtney was the first American Girl character to be exclusive to the post-BeForever era. Courtney likes playing video games and dreams of creating her own video game. Throughout the books, Courtney learns the importance of female representation. Courtney has sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Courtney is from 1986, the year American Girl dolls released. Courtney was released in 2020 and is still available.
Fun and creative Isabel was part of the first twin set of 18-inch American Girl dolls. Isabel likes dancing with her friends and playing tennis, and throughout her book, she learns the importance of family and embracing herself for who she is. Isabel has blond hair, green eyes, light skin and the Joss mold. Isabel and her sister Nicki are also the first interfaith dolls from American Girl. Isabel was released in 2023 and is still available.

Lindsey has brown hair, blue eyes, freckles, light skin and the Classic mold. Lindsey was the first Girl of the Year ever and has the smallest collection. She was released on September 1, 2001 and retired on December 31, 2002.
Kailey was the Girl of the Year in 2003. She is a girl who loves the beach and the tide polls- and she fights back when a developer threatens to take away the tide pools. Kailey has blond hair, brown eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Kailey was the first Girl of the Year to only be available for a year. Kailey released on July 1, 2003 and retired on July 1, 2004.
Marisol is the Girl of the Year 2005. She is a dancer of many styles who's life changes when she moves from Chicago to a suburb with no dance studio. Marisol has brown hair, brown eyes, medium skin and the Josefina mold. Marisol's book gained controversy from residents of Marisol's old neighborhood after a passage in the book said that the neighborhood was "dangerous" and that there was "no place to play." Marisol came out on December 27, 2004 and retired on December 26, 2005.
Jess was the Girl of the Year in 2006. Jess is a adventurous girl who travels to Belize with her parents and finds a adventure on her own while her parents are working. Jess has reddish-black hair, brown eyes, light skin and a face mold that was first used on her- the Jess mold. Jess was the first Girl of the Year to have pajamas. Jess was released on December 26, 2005 and retired on December 31, 2006.
Nicki was the Girl of the Year 2007. Nicki is a girl who loves animals- and while her mom is pregnant, gets to train a service dog named Sprocket. Nicki has caramel hair, blue eyes, freckles, light skin and the Classic mold. Nicki was the first Girl of the Year to come out on January 1, a tradition that has been done ever since her.
Mia was the Girl of the Year in 2008. Mia is a ice skater who is learning to be a good sport and practice more to do better, as well as persevere through her parent's money troubles. Mia has strawberry blond hair, hazel eyes, freckles, light skin and the Classic mold. Mia has a unique freckle pattern that hasn't been used on anyone else. Mia had a PC computer game called Mia Goes For Great.
Chrissa was the Girl of the Year in 2009. She is a girl who likes swimming as well as arts and crafts who learns the importance of standing up against bullying when she moves. Chrissa has black hair, blue eyes, light skin and the Josefina mold. Chrissa was the first and only American Girl doll to have two Best Friend dolls, as well as the first and only Girl of the Year to do so. Chrissa also had the first Girl of the Year movie, Chrissa Stands Strong, where she was played by Sammi Hannaraty.
Gwen was a companion doll to Chrissa, who was Girl of the Year 2009. Gwen is a shy girl in Chrissa's new class who is homeless and finds a friend in Chrissa. Gwen has blond hair, brown eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Gwen is nearly identical to Just Like You 12- the only difference is bang style. Gwen gained some controversy in September and October 2009 for being homeless yet being $95.
Sonali was a companion doll to Chrissa, Girl of the Year 2009. She is a former member of the bully group at school, the Mean Bees, who changes and becomes friends with Chrissa and Gwen after being disturbed by the bullying. Sonali has black hair, brown eyes, dark skin and a face mold first used on her. The character of Sonali in the book and movie have darker skin than the Sonali doll. Sonali's mold was first developed for Mia, but was made for Sonali after Mia was decided to be a white redhead.
Lanie was the Girl of the Year in 2010. She is a girl who loves the outdoors and dreams of adventure, and when her Aunt Hannah comes to visit, realizes that she can start a adventure in her own backyard. Lanie has blond hair, hazel eyes, light skin and the Classic mold. Lanie has the most animals in her collection out of any doll, having 5 animals.
Kanani was the Girl of the Year in 2011. Kanani is a girl from Hawaii who finds out the true meaning of aloha when her cousin from New York comes to visit and Kanani rescues a seal. Kanani has brown hair, hazel eyes, medium skin and the Jess face mold. Kanani is half white, a quarter Hawaiian and a quarter Japanese. Kanani's story was extended through the first Girl of the Year app, Shave Ice.
McKenna was the Girl of the Year in 2012. McKenna is a gymnast who learns to turn troubles into triumphs when she breaks her leg doing a difficult move and needs a tutor for reading comprehension. McKenna has caramel hair, blue eyes, light skin and the Josefina mold. McKenna was the first Girl of the Year to have a exclusive outfit to a starter collection. McKenna has a app called Gymtastic and a movie called McKenna Shoots for the Stars, where McKenna is played by Nick star Jade Pettyjohn.
Saige was the Girl of the Year for 2013. Saige is a artist who loves riding horses and learns to stand up for what she believes in when there is no more art classes at school. Grace is a baker who is inspired to make her own French baking business after a trip to Paris, while dealing with a new pet and saving her grandparent's bakery. Grace has a app called Sweet Shop and movie, Grace Stirs Up Success, where she is played by Disney Channel star Olivia Rodrigo.

She is nearly identical to Truly Me 46, the only difference is the lip color and zip tie on Gabriela. Gabriela retired in 2018.
Luciana is the Girl of the Year for 2018. Luciana is a girl who wants to be the first person on Mars, and explores being a astronaut and learns to be a good team player at Space Camp and advanced astronaut training. Luciana has black hair with a purple streak, brown eyes, medium skin and the Josefina mold. Luciana was the only Girl of the Year in the American Girl Live musical. Luciana retired in 2021.
Blaire is the Girl of the Year for 2019. Blaire is a girl who lives on a farm, and explores her knack for helping others through planning a wedding and helping with a food drive. Blaire has red hair, green eyes, light skin and the Josefina mold. Blaire had a live-action cooking tutorial series on the American Girl YouTube channel. Blaire retired in 2021.
Joss is the Girl of the Year for 2020. Joss is a girl who loves surfing, but is dared to try cheer and learns the importance of confidence and trying new things. Joss has brown hair, brown eyes, light skin and a new face mold. Joss is hard-of-hearing and comes with a hearing aid. Joss retired in June 2022.
Kira is the Girl of the Year for 2021. Kira visits her aunts' wildlife sanctuary in Australia and learns about the importance of wildlife protection and climate change. Kira has blonde hair, green eyes, light skin and the Josefina face mold. Kira is the first AG character to have LGBT representation in her story via her aunts Mamie and Lynette. Kira retired in February 2023.
Corinne is the Girl of the Year for 2022. Corinne is a girl training a search and rescue dog named Flurry who has to adjust to her newly blended family. Corinne has black hair with blue streaks, brown eyes, light skin and a new face mold. Corinne has a little sister, Gwynn, who is available as a WellieWishers-sized doll. Corinne is also the first Girl of the Year of full Asian descent. Corinne is available after 2022 while supplies last.
Kavi is the Girl of the Year for 2023. A theater kid at heart, Kavi’s life changes when she joins a talent revue at her school with her friends, but must deal with both pressures from her friends and a struggle to keep her grades up so she can participate. Tenney Grant is a Contemporary Character. She is a singer who learns the importance of being true to yourself when she gets discovered by a Nashville record label and becomes part of a duo with a boy named Logan. Tenney has blond hair, a unique shade of brown eyes, freckles, light skin and the Classic mold. It is highly thought around the American Girl community that Tenney was originally going to be the 2017 Girl of the Year. Tenney was released on February 16, 2017 and retired in 2018.
Logan is a Contemporary Character. He is a boy who becomes part of a music duo with a girl named Tenney and learns the importance of teamwork and dedication, all while dealing with the absence of his dad at home. Logan has brown hair, gray eyes, light skin and the Kaya mold. Logan is the first American Girl boy doll. Logan was released on February 16, 2017 to much media coverage and retired in 2018.
Z. is a Contemporary Character. She is a aspiring filmmaker who realizes that herself is the best person to be when she gets a opportunity to make a movie for the CloudSong film festival. Z has black hair, brown eyes, a mole on her cheek, light skin and the Jess mold. Prior to Z's release, she hosted a series on the American Girl YouTube channel called Z.crew. Z was released on April 27, 2017 and retired in 2018.
Makena is a World By Us doll. She is a girl who likes fashion and posting her outfits on Instagram, but must find her voice through fashion when a racist incident happens in her own front yard. Makena has black hair, brown eyes, dark skin and an unique face mold. Makena's mold is the first made especially for a African-American doll since Addy in 1993.
Evette is a World By Us doll. Evette likes to thrift shop and discovering vintage things, but when she finds out the rift in her family was caused by racism, she must find a way for her grandmothers to make amends. Evette has the Josefina mold, medium skin, caramel hair, gray eyes and freckles. Evette is the first medium-skinned doll to have freckles.
Maritza is a World By Us doll. She likes to play soccer with her friends, but when she discovers that her friend Violeta's uncle has been detained by immigration officials, she helps her friend by finding a way to make things right.
